I CAN DO MOST THINGS, IT JUST TAKES ME TWICE THE TIME

Monaco, here. I got the 411 on my scooter crash.

I want to thank everyone who helped me up when I fell. I couldn't have turned this around without the love from Scooter-Relief and my friends.

Anyhow, I'm way too much of a positive thinker to write sad stories, so I'm going to write about making the best out of the worst. So just imagine...

Okay, here's a good place to start: I have no recollection of the crash. It's as if it never happened and I just woke up in a hospital bed all banged up, pumped with morphine, wondering how I got here. After I went in and out of shock, I accepted the terms that this was indeed, not a dream...

The last thing I can remember was riding away from my house after our recent victories in the David Hastelhoff Dodgeball Team. That Halloween, the Rebel Alliance gathered in the Chocolate City from all over the world to take place in one phenomenal ceremonial event: DOWN N' DIRTY #7. Even with the crash, it was the Best Scooter Rally EVER!

HOSPITAL LIFE:
Various people operated on me in the next few days and friends were a comforting blessing. I'm thinking yea, I got broken bones, but I got things to do today. So I ripped my collar off, then my IV and checked myself out early. Needless to say, I was back in two days- I dislocated my shoulder trying to um, yea, I was sweeping the manor. Popped it back in. Checked out again...

CHANGE:
The worst part is that I'm out of work for a while. But I learned that I could do most things, it just takes me a little longer. Needless to say, I don't sleep much these days. One thing is for sure: The forces of existence, God, the essence of life, or whatever you call it- changed the course of my destiny. Seriously, I had things to do today- like, get my hustle on Bourbon St- but fate disagreed with that. I had to accept that I lost control and adapt with the river that I am flowing down... Indeed, nothing will ever be the same.

BRIGHTSIDE:
I got loaded on 500 mg Percocets for week or two. Naturally, I got real sick and I came down HARD . I felt the magnitude of my injuries for a few days and then one evening, I felt a cool sensation in my wrist. The screw was acting as a sensor and alerted me just before the temperature dropped and I adjusted the AC accordingly. Astounding.

You know how the pulp settles in OJ and you have to take a bottle and shake it up? Crashing that moped did just that and the outcome was most electrifying. It's as if a reactor was set off and I got to watched it unfold as everything fell into perspective...

Since the scooter wreck, I've learned to:

  • Type this page one-handed

  • Write left-handed (sort of)
  • Ride a bicycle one-handed. (Passengers welcome!)
  • Brew 5 post of coffee everyday.
  • Repair a hard drive.
  • Repair a vintage synth.
  • Set up my neighbors wireless network. ($80, yeah!)
  • Recorded a few sessions with two amazing female vocalists.
  • And I plan to add "Ride a scooter" to this list when these casts come off.

SCOOTER-RELIEF:
So with my one good arm and my new found second sight, I embark on a mission. I got in that wreck for a reason. Because I don't want what happened to me to happen to anyone else, I am teaching and educating the importance of safety.

90% of my injuries could have been prevented with a full face helmet & proper riding gear. Don't plan on crashing? Neither did I. Not to scare you, but never take riding for granted.

I've raised money for Scooter-Relief in the past and it always feels good to do something for a greater cause. So I'm volunteering here again, working on the website, spreadin da word and whatnot. I must say, it feels a little wierd being on the receiving end. I honestly never thought I'd need Scooter-Relief. Hmm...

REMEMBER: Not only am I a volunteer at Scooter-Relief, but I'm also a client!

SHOUT!
Keith: Thanks to you, I'll be riding through sprinklers sooner than you know it.
Grant, Camilla, Dr. Jeremy, Kristen, Allison, Robin, Melissa, Allie, Sarah: Thanks for bringing me groceries, giving me rides and whatnot.
Jedi Knight Scooter Club, Uncle Phil & the national scooter community for your distant help. (I love them cards!)
Allie: For being the most amazing new person. If anyone can get through to me, it's you.
9th Ward Records for making the best music in New Orleans... (Okay, that's my label.)

P.S. If any of you want a website designed, HIRE ME. I need the work.

Can't stop,
